Every good entrepreneur needs a team of supportive people behind them and the trusty PA is usually top of the list. But is hiring a full-time salaried member of staff the best option nowadays? Would a virtual assistant be a more savvy option in today’s ever changing tech-heavy world? Do you really need a permanent member of staff when a virtual one is immediately available at the click of an email?

Before we begin listing the numerous reasons why we at Farrens believe that as a multifaceted virtual assistance team we can offer you far more than one personal assistant could, we want to make it clear that we do not in any way intend to belittle the PA role. In fact one of our premium services is PA mentoring, and through this process we have met some amazing PAs without whom the businesses they work for would not function. The role of a PA is perfect for some organisations, often those with a larger staff capacity. However for many organisations, especially new start-ups, and SMEs, hiring a virtual assistant could be the perfect solution.

The primary reason that any business takes on new staff, salaried or virtual, is to increase productivity. Any decent business plan will consider outsourcing in their recruitment process. Why should this be the case? As Tom Cruise very eloquently put it, ‘show me the money’.

Let’s be honest none of us would choose to work if we didn’t have to. If life was free we’d all spend every day at the beach or travelling the world. Unfortunately this utopia does not exist and so we find ourselves in the daily grind of work, eat, sleep five (sometimes seven) days a week.

We all want the best value for money in every aspect of our lives and we believe that virtual assistance offers that. Let’s look at the figures for a second. According to Neuvoo (https://neuvoo.co.uk/salary/Pa-salary-in-Wales) the average annual PA salary in Wales is £26,707, or £14 per hour.

Wait a minute, don’t you charge £30 an hour? That’s double!

Yes we do, but let’s break the figures down.

Imagine this £26,707 is based on a 37.5 hour week, with four weeks holiday – already you have four weeks in which you are paying for no work to be completed. Now don’t get us wrong we fully believe everyone is entitled to paid holiday. Our point is that for those four weeks your workload, or your employees’ workloads, will increase significantly. Or you will have to employ a temporary virtual assistant to cover the workload in those four weeks, thus paying double.

Let’s also consider the working day. Every staff member is entitled to an hours paid lunchbreak, another hour you are paying for with no return. Factor into this equation paid sick leave and tax, pension and national insurance contributions and the £ signs are quickly increasing before your eyes.

It is important to remember that a personal assistant is a long-term commitment; you will, for the most part, have a guaranteed member of staff to take your calls, make your bookings and generally manage your administration on a daily basis. But what if you don’t actually have enough work for a full-time, or even a part-time PA. What if you actually only need to employ someone one or two days a week, or even one or two weeks a month?

A virtual assistant is essentially a pay-as-you-go service.
